ChessMachina is a native iPhone app for playing chess against reconstructed historical machines and a modern local engine, currently in development. Find help with Historical Mode, Compute Mode, and Replay here.
What is the difference between Historical and Compute?
Historical Mode lets you play against reconstructed historical chess machines from 1912 to 1997. Compute Mode uses ChessMachina's own modern local reference engine with an adjustable compute budget.
Why does a historical machine behave unusually?
Historical algorithms deliberately have different limits than modern engines. Unusual behavior can be part of the reconstructed historical logic.
Why can a historical game be stopped?
When a reconstructed historical algorithm reaches an undocumented state, ChessMachina does not silently invent a modern workaround.
Are historical machines deliberately weakened?
No. They follow their respective reconstructed historical logic and are not given artificial random mistakes.
Where are my games stored?
Locally on your device.
How does replay work?
A saved game is reconstructed from its starting position and move sequence and played back again.
Does ChessMachina work offline?
Core gameplay and the historical and modern local engines do not require a custom online service. Individual external links outside the app may still require an internet connection.
Why is there no Elo rating?
ChessMachina does not display uncalibrated or invented Elo ratings.
How do challenge links work?
This feature is not confirmed for the current development status and is not described here until it is verified in the final app build.
